전시 설명

조선시대에는 불상과 불화를 제작하는 승려 장인들이 있었습니다. 이들은 수행자이자 예술가로서, 전국을 돌며 사찰의 재건과 불교미술품 제작에 헌신했습니다. 특히 임진왜란 이후 사찰 복구 과정에서 그들의 역할이 두드러졌습니다. 대표적인 승려 장인으로는 조각승 현진, 화승 이겸 등이 있으며, 그들의 작품은 오늘날에도 높은 예술적 가치를 인정받고 있습니다.

승려 장인은 예배용 물건, 사원 구조물, 장식 작품을 만드는 불교 승려입니다. 그들은 종종 기술자, 예술가, 영적 수행자로 간주됩니다. 특히 불상을 제작하는 승려를 “조각가”라고 하고 불화를 그리는 승려를 “화가”라고 합니다.

국립중앙박물관에서는 2021년 12월 7일부터 2022년 3월 6일까지 '조선의 승려 장인' 특별전을 개최하여, 이들의 삶과 예술 세계를 조명한 바 있습니다.

I never got around to writing a proper review on my usual Naver blog after visiting the Buddhist Artisans of Joseon exhibition. I just posted a few photos on Instagram, and that was it. So, I’m finally organizing my thoughts and sharing them here.

I visited the exhibition on December 31, 2021. If you remember, there was an early bird ticket, and since I was one of the first to enter that day, I even got a postcard as a special gift. It was a nice little surprise and made the experience feel even more special.

The exhibition showcased 145 pieces of Buddhist sculptures, paintings, and woodblock prints crafted by monk artisans during the Joseon Dynasty. These weren’t just religious objects — they were masterpieces of skill and detail, each piece telling its own story.

What stuck with me most was the recreation of the monks' workspace, complete with their tools and techniques. It felt like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into their world and the entire creative process behind their work.

Looking back, I realized that Buddhist art in Joseon wasn’t just about faith — it was also about innovation and artistry. The exhibition gave me a deeper appreciation for how these artisans shaped Korea’s cultural legacy. It remains one of the most memorable exhibits I’ve ever seen.
